Waking up the giant….

Back at school, and rushing around trying to organise two new ICT suites and all the problems that come with them. Technicians have moved, faster Internet connection and two new teachers. Should be an exciting year at El Alsson British International School. Hopefully Moodle will cross over into being used with Business Studies, especially as the new Head of Department is very much into electronic resources.

But what about the M.A. well I have the feeling it is a few weeks away until we start yet. Still scrabbling over the small disappointment’s of not scoring as highly as I had wanted after so much work on my Moodle environment and hoping that the next module will have a more rigorous explanation of what is needed when it comes to writing the assignment. I have been endeavoring to read the ‘Virtual Society? Technology, Cyberbole, Reality’ and initial feelings are the scepticism that is subtly written within the first chapter about virtual worlds and beyond might be a good way to bring back some of my over-enthusiastic feelings towards ICT within Education. Although the FirstClass experience and distance learning which does not produce always a collaborative and supportive working environment has also gone some way into making me think more deeply about simply what works and what does not?

3 weeks and counting…..

The Wonders of CSS Styling and the Browser Wars

Well miraculously managed to solve the latest problems within the CSS stylesheet that came up when I realised that both blogs I am running were not rendering at all well in the new Microsoft Beta Browser IE7. I was a little dismayed as I happen to actually quite like the browser and it is a vast improvement over IE6. It will not replace my avid appreciation of Firefox but is now definitely an alternative that I will use on occasion. The use of tabbed browsing and the very similar Google search bar located in the top right hand corner all make it a browser I can now start to recommend again, especially to students who seem to love the world of Microsoft?

The biggest problem is how IE7 renders CSS stylesheets (for those unsure of what a stylesheet is check this simple site for an explanation) differently so causing the problems that I have now rectified simply by changing the “height: 100%” declaration in the “body” selector of the CSS file to “height: auto”. Go figure …huh! It makes little sense, but I can only see the problem actually getting even worse.

Anyways students..download IE7 and you can still see my blogs now …you are so lucky…

Moodle 1.6 will take a little longer….

Well besides the fact that I am having some troubles with updating my Moodle installation but also deciding that as it is the summer holiday I should be taking a little more relaxed attitude, I am aiming for a return of my CICT Moodle by the start of term so my students can start using the LMS again hopefully with a few new elements to intrigue them.

Have started to read Virtual Society? Technology, Cyberbole and Reality. But finding it heavy going as an introduction to the next module. And also looking through the ‘Doing Your Research Project?’ for my critical study although no further ideas except maybe the idea about focusing down on cultural attitudes to Web 2.0 learning tools and their problems within restrictive religious or political societies? Hmmm! could be interesting…

But most importantly here is Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra…..

Wrestling with Moodle 1.6, and other joys…

Well still waiting upon my results for my second module, while everyone else seems to have got them. Awwww…. Have to now start thinking about what to do for my ‘Critical Study’, and yes I should be relaxing on holiday, but its been going through my mind. Some ideas I will have to cogitate are:-

  • Web 2.0 – Read/Write Web and its effects on education – linking to ideas if connected learning, saftey issues and whether they would be valuable learning tools in the future that are linked with some clever piece of software
  • Eportfolio use in a secondary school – Will it work, maybe setup Elgg and link to Moodle and then test out over period of time
  • Is an LMS practical with teachers who are technocentric? – International schools and poor ICT provision is an LMS a worthy addition that all subjects could use?

Well theres a few? Will have to think about those a little more. Although the idea of Elgg setup scares me as my Moodle site has just gone down although I’m looking to make the event a positive and upgrade to Moodle 1.6 in the mean times. Have begun on my eportfolio address using Joomla as a basic template which should lead to an easy repository of ideas and information. I wonder whether I can link it to my WordPress blog somehow?

Lots of good stoof around…

As Will suggested yes maybe I should not be touching this computer, but I had a look at my bloglines account today and found loads of interesting stuff around. Not least the MoodleMoot has finished to which I might have been able to go if I had not travelled to Mexico! They are providing video and audio of all the presentations at the Moot so it is worth a look.

Also their is a great posting on the Around the Corner blog about the wonderful world of VLE acronyms, something which I talked about a little in my recent assignment. Miguel clears up the terms CMS and LMS rather well although I still think they are all slowly merging into each other.

Well I have been on this computer for well over an hour and where has the time gone again. Will need to look closely into how I am controlling my time on this ‘thing’ and the Masters assignments next year. Interestingly found a good article and tool about at least monitoring your time from David Seah which might help. Will have a go with it when I return to home!

Well have to go to lunch, will have to kerb my bloglines patrolling for the next few days.
